The Master of Product Design Labs at the IED Madrid has a new director: Clive van Heerden. Aged 54, the British designer boasts an admirable professional career in the world of design and research.

He is the former Director of Design Led Innovation at Philips Design. One of his main responsibilities was to lead the Probes programme, made up of wide-ranging research initiatives, with the aim of identifying long-term systemic changes and anticipating the lifestyles of the future.

Clive and his team have enjoyed great international recognition. Time magazine named Emotional Sensing Apparel one of the best inventions of 2007. And, among other awards, they have consistently received IF Product Design, Red Dot Design Awards, and recently the Red Dot Luminary Award (2011) for the project Microbial Home.

BIOGRAPHY
During his time at university in South Africa, Clive studied Political Science and Industrial Sociology at the University of Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg. In 1986 he moved to London, where he was granted a research fellowship at the CCIS (Centre for Communication and Information Studies) by Westminster University, and he graduated in 1991 with an MA in Interaction Design from the Royal College of Art in London.

Clive arrived at Philips Research in 1995, with the aim of bringing designers into the technical research process. In 1998 he transferred to Philips Design to direct the research activities linked to Soft Technologies design, where he brought together a team of experts from a range of fashion, textile and engineering disciplines. Clive has also been in charge of the Philips Design branches in New York, Redhill and London.

A new set of Masters of Design and Innovation, the heavy bet taken by IED Madrid in design and innovation, will start this Thursday, 26^th January. After a highly successful five years, these Masters courses have created a favourable setting for strengthening variety of thought and analysing current design matters from different approaches: concept and the avant-guard, business strategy, production and communication.

The four Masters courses are run by internationally renowned professionals: Jaime Hayon, a key figure in contemporary design, will once again be running the Master of European Design Labs; Clive van Heerden, globally renowned in the world of design and innovation, is the new course manager for the Master of Product Design Labs; Toni Segarra, founding partner and creative director of the advertising agency *S,C,P,F…, will be in charge of the Master of Communication Design Labs and Carlos Barrabés, the great pioneer in online sales, will head up the Master of Strategic Design Labs.

The international focus of these Masters courses can be seen in the range of nationalities among our students; and through their transversal didactic method, taught bilingually, combining workshops, trips, seminars, master classes and a final thesis – research task covering the entire academic year.

The opening ceremony will take place at the IED head offices in the Edificio Modernista, in Calle Larra, Madrid. This is an exclusive event for students on the Masters of Design and Innovation 2012 courses, and will be attended by Dario Assante, Director of IED Master. The four course directors will also reflect on the future of design, followed by a private meeting with their respective students.

Product designer and former student of the Master of European Design Labs 2011.

She was born in Madrid (Spain) in 1986. She graduated in 2008, as a technical engineer specialising in Industrial Design, with a diploma in Interior and Furniture Design from the Universidad Antonio de Nebrija in Madrid. She began to work at Vidal y Asociados Arquitectos, and took part in a joint project with the Rogers Stirk Harbour architecture studio, carrying out interior design activities at the new offices of Abengoa in Seville. Later on, she began to work as co-manager of Espacio de Ideas, a company working in the field of corporate advertising.

In 2011, she took the Master of European Design Labs, where she forged her identity as product designer. She describes her experience at the IED Madrid as very positive. From the start, I had the chance to be surrounded by people who share the same interests as me, who come from a range of design disciplines and who have enriched my personal experience regarding design, she says. When asked why she would recommend studying this MA course, she says: because it helps you get to know yourself as a designer, to be capable of being consistent with your personality in your work, lending a unique trademark to your designs. Additionally, it is a year during which you are immersed in the world of design, with exhibitions, visits to workshops and trips, so that you are fully engaged with what is happening on the European design scene.

Her final thesis project, Frozen Instants, emerges as a result of her desire to encapsulate moments. The focus of the work lies in the shadows of the trees. The aim is to capture those instants of natural life in the “outdoor space” and convey them to the “indoor space”. Almudena has worked on two different surfaces: a series of ceramic tiles and a table. The tiles, with a triangular shape and natural patterns, can be combined to create unusual and varied compositions. Each combination gives rise to a different “shadow”, thanks to the pattern printed on them. The door consists of a wooden board with a photosensitive finish where shadows are perceived indirectly. The image changes depending on the time of day and the kind of light which falls on the table.

At present, Almudena is working on an object which emerged from a workshop with Cul de Sac during the Master of European Design Labs. The workshop dealt with the gestures of objects, and I made a quick prototype for a match-lighter which I am perfecting at the moment. I am also about to begin another projected based on a new concept, on the basis of my identity, for which I will assess, along with my MA classmates, the chance of doing something together, she says.

Carlos Barrabés, Director of the IED Madrid‘s Master of Strategic Design Labs , shows us in this video how students have learned a new way of looking and thinking from a design perspective in order to develop effective strategies for companies.

Very few times I have seen so brilliant people together and so focused. The result of this experience has been a group of people extremely prepared for the fure. With no doubt this sort of people belongs to those who can change things and make the diference, Barrabés confirms.

The work of the students, supervised by Miriam Lázaro, Projects Director of Barrabés Internet, reflects the fusion between the concept of design and business management, always with an innovative vision. With regard to this, the theses offer a vision of business or services in line with the current demand, where the role of the designer acquires greater importance and is integrated in the processes.

Toni Segarra, Director of the IED Madrid‘s Master of Communication Design Labs, explains in this video how students have successfully worked on concepts, strategic development and positioning major brands in a market that is constantly transforming.

Our obsession during the whole master has been trying to insist in the conceptual thinking, Segarra comments.

Always under the attentive supervision and monitoring of the tutors Nacho Rapallo, Quique Baeza (Creative Directors at *S,C,P,F…) and Jorge Martínez (Founding Partner and Creative Director of Germinal Comunicacion), the students carried out exhaustive research with the objective of developing and designing creative solutions for the communication of different brands: J&B, Levi’s, Virgin, Nokia, British Airways, Braun, Pepsi, MTV, Kodak, etc.

Jaime Hayon, Director of the IED Madrid‘s Master of European Design Labs, shows us in this video how students have worked on the topic of identity from a design perspective, developing their proposals with the utmost creativity.

You study this Master to learn to think, to get to an idea and to learn a personal equation. If you’re able to determinane that personal equation in your future, your professional career starts, and from there the world is opened, Hayon comments.

The architects and designers Luis Úrculo and Paloma Uriel were the tutors of the students through brainstorming, reflection and synthesis for developing products that demonstrate creativity, innovation and design.

Colombian designer Felipe Eusse launched Nobsas on the market, two innovative proposals created at the Experimento Victoria 2012, a project in which Victoria footwear discovers the creative processes of 12 former alumni of the Master of European Design Labs 2010.

When it came time to create these shoes, Eusse had in mind two typical articles of clothing in Colombia: a ruana, an artisan sheep wool material, and the traditional thin, fine cotton poncho. Both are ideal for the diversity of climates existing in the same territory.

On the one hand, the fall/winter Nobsas are based on the ruana. Made of thick, raw wool in various grey tones, they are perfect for protection against low temperatures. On the other hand, the spring/summer Nobsas, inspired by the poncho, are white or a whitish color with colored thread detail (for example, red and blue threads). Ideal for hot temperatures.

This way, Eusse reinterprets the country’s identity with strong climatic differences, bringing artisan textile products from Colombia to the present time with the Nobsas, in a more universal way.

Trained as an industrial designer, Eusse has his own studio, EUSSE DESIGN STUDIO. His international vision and access to the Master of European Design Labs research laboratory at the IED Madrid in 2010 have increased his passion for design and trends.

After a whole year of training and experimentation, the effort has been worth it. The results can be seen until the 22^nd of December, in the exhibition New Visions, New Leaders at the premises of the IED Master, and will also be available in a book format.

The publication captures all the activities carried out during the last edition of the Masters of Design and Innovation, the most advanced training offered at the IED Madrid, aimed at the fields of product design, communications and business strategies, which boast, among their best features, such renowned directors as Jaime Hayon, Toni Segarra and Carlos Barrabés.

Published in Spanish and English, the book includes a detailed graphic and written documentation on the journeys, workshops, seminars and other experiences which took place during the Master of European Design Labs, the Master of Communication Design Labs and the Master of Strategic Design Labs.

Additionally, it includes texts by the students themselves, where they present and explain their thesis projects; and texts written by the directors of the MA courses, where they reflect on the current multidisciplinary context, empowering divergent thought and analysing the situation of design in a transverse way. Without a doubt, it is a collection of privileged information on all that is taking place in the field of design, as well as offering a view of its future.

On Monday, December 5^th, the IED Madrid inaugurated the Identity exhibition at the prestigious Stroganov Moscow State University of Arts and Industry (Russia). The exhibition shows the work created by ten Master’s students in the Master of European Design Labs 2010: Barak Alberro, Felipe Eusse, María Domínguez, María Paula Benvegnú, Paula Sevilla, Carissa Santoso, María Perales, Renée Roussow and SashaDasha.

Sisters Aleksandra and Daria Gantseva (SashaDasha), explained each project to a diverse audience composed of: designers, professors, students and the University Rector. The Russian institution, considered to be one of the most important in Moscow, has trained generations of Russian artists and designers throughout its 180 years of history. Among its illustrious alumni are Wassily Kandinsky and Alexander Rodchenko, who was a professor at the school in the second decade of the last century. Rodchenko’s grandson, Aleksandr Lavréntiev, also attended the inauguration with great enthusiasm, appreciating the projects and highlighting their originality and elegance.

After the introduction by SashaDasha, Dario Assante, Director of the IED Master, held a lecture on the role of designers today in creative processes and problem solving methodologies, such as Design Thinking. With the success of these tools in the most diverse environments, it is important for there to be professionals prepared with their own mentis and skills that help lead multidisciplinary teams and activate decision-making processes with ease.

“Identity” is the main theme of this exhibition, which will be open until December 16, 2011. The pieces (ceramics, textiles, audiovisuals, glass and jewelry) have been defined based on the personal and professional roots of each designer at three main moments in time: identity as origin, identity as environment and, finally, identity as perspective, as a future project.

The IED Madrid presents New Visions, New Leaders, the exhibition created during the last edition of the Masters of Design and Innovation, which can be visited from December 13-21, 2011 at the IED Master headquarters.

The final thesis represents a gold medal after an academic year structured by transversal academics, held in bilingual format, combining workshops, trips, seminars and Master’s classes. Students worked in an interdisciplinary environment and developed these excellent projects in the areas of product design, commercial communications and business strategies. For the first time this year, the conditions were ideal to activate this cycle with the simultaneous launch of three of the four Masters of Design and Innovation programs, comments Dario Assante, Director of the IED Master.

The Master of European Design Labs continues with the successful theme of the previous edition, “Identity.” Individual research, knowledge acquired and personal experiences, along with meetings with international designers, are the basis of this study methodology. Luis Úrculo and Paloma Uriel have tutored the young designers through brainstorming, reflection and synthesis for developing products that demonstrate creativity, innovation and design.

Since the beginning of the program, each student of the Master of Communication Design Labs has worked on an ambitious project to put into practice all the knowledge acquired throughout the year. Always under the attentive supervision and monitoring of specialized tutors (Nacho Rapallo, Quique Baeza and Jorge Martínez), the students carried out exhaustive research with the objective of developing and designing creative solutions for the communication of different brands.

The work of the Master of Strategic Design Labs, supervised by Miriam Lázaro, reflects the fusion between the concept of design and business management, always with an innovative vision. Based on this, the theses offer a vision of business or services in line with the current demand, where the role of the designer acquires greater importance and is integrated in the processes. The implementation of the creative thinking methodology has been assumed and applied directly through ad hoc seminars and indirectly through the resolution of cases and the very development of the thesis, confirms Riccardo Marzullo, Director of the IED Madrid.

The inauguration of the exhibition, on December 12^th, features three major figures of strategy, design and communications: Jaime Hayon (Director of the Master of European Design Labs), Toni Segarra (Director of the Master of Communication Design Labs) and Carlos Barrabés (Director of the Master of Strategic Design Labs).
