On Wednesday, May 19th, Clive van Heerden, the Creative Director of Philips Design Probes will meet with the students of 2010 Master of European Design Labs, with whom he will share his experience in design and the development of innovative products and services.
That same afternoon, van Heerden will meet with Takayuki Kubo and Carlos Barrabés to hold a conference called Designing the society of the future (Diseñando la sociedad del futuro) at 7:30 p.m. at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, initiating the Future Observatory. The conference will be broadcast online at madriddesignnet.com and Pedro Medina will serve as moderator.
Organized by the IED Madrid, the Future Observatory analyzes society, offering strategic visions from diverse disciplines that reflect on the future of the city as a place of social exchange. Its program includes 5 conferences taking place in Madrid, Shanghai, Sao Paulo, Barcelona and Milan.

In 1995, he joined the Philips Research team, and later served as the Senior Director of Design-Led Innovation at Philips Design since 1998, where he directs the Research Program. He has developed projects such as Electronic Tattoo, Emotional sensing Dresses, Diagnostic Kitchen and Sustainable Habitat 2020, among others. He studied at the University of South Africa, where he received two degrees in social sciences and a research grant from the University of Westminster. He graduated with a Masters in Interactive Design from the Royal College of Art in London. With the Philips Design research team, he has received awards for innovation and design, such as the Best of the best red dot award and the award for best invention of 2007 from Time magazine.
Takayuki Kubo, Senior Researcher at The Mori Memorial Foundation. (Japan)
Architect and Senior Researcher of urban strategies at The Mori Memorial Foundation. In 2009, he completed the Shanghai World Financial Center, his most important international work, and became affiliated with the Japanese Institute of Architects. In 2009, he published his research for Global Power City Index 2009 and is currently doing research on Global Cities with the Institute of Urban Strategies. Raised in New York, Yokohama and Kyoto until he moved to Tokyo to study Architecture and Oceanography at the University of Nihon. He continued his studies as an architect and planner at the University of Engineering in Kyoto and in 1990 received his architect’s license. He has completed various urban projects in Tokyo Bay, including the headquarters of Japan Airlines. After graduating from the University of Cornwell, he worked at RTKL Associates in Washington DC, AXS Satow Inc. in Tokyo and Mori Buildon Co.
Carlos Barrabés, international strategy expert and founder of Barrabes.biz. (España)
Technician of Business and Tourism Activities. In 1995, he developed one of the first successful electronic businesses in the world with Barrabes.com, which is still a leader in its sector and an example of innovation in today’s society. This successful case serves as a reference point for innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), Microsoft, Intel and Telefónica. In 1998, he presented Barrabés 2.0, which has won awards such as PC World, Ibest and the award for Best Company from the Association of Internet Users. In 2000, along with the Government of Aragón, he created the Walqa initiative and founded the company Barrabés.biz, a consulting firm specializing in SMEs, which provides advisory services for exportation, innovation, logistics and technology. He currently serves as the Directing Advisor for SMEs and new technologies for numerous organizations and companies, such as the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, ICEX and Vodafone. This year, he was included in the list of Young Global Leaders compiled by the World Economic Forum, which recognizes leaders under 40 who can change the world.
