This week, the students of the Master of Product Design Labs and the Master of European Design Labs took part in the workshop WE ARE, led by the designer Pedro Ferreira (Pedrita) during the week from the 12th to the 16th of March at the IED Madrid.
The workshop took as its starting point the personal interpretation of four concepts/elements: people, memories, places and objects. The main aim was to delve into the sensibilities of the students and get them to leave behind their frenzied day-to-day, and to find out who we/they are (hence the title of the workshop). Following a preliminary session to define and share the ideas of each participant, they began to search for an image which could illustrate their ideas on each of these four elements. The next step was the creation of small paper structures which would also represent the four original concepts. The individual work of each of the students was rounded off with a single sentence “We are…”, which defined what we are, what we are made of…
“This personal exploration workshop was also very therapeutic, as the sculptures played two roles: to function as a channel to convey such sensitive and introspective ideas and as a focus of concentration for each student, a way of isolating themselves from the outside noise so that they could create something with their hands”, said Pedro Ferreira.
The studio is made up of Rita João (Lisbon, 1978) and Pedro Ferreira (Lisbon, 1978), who received their design training at the Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, as well as studying at the TU Delft and the Politecnico di Milano, respectively. In September 2002, they began working at FABRICA, where, in 2004, they managed the 3D Design department. One year later they set up their own studio, which develops lots of projects in collaboration with structures, creative individuals and customers from all over the world. Inspired by traditional Portuguese forms and techniques, their work takes an inquisitive look at the material culture –both its past and its present – in a series of projects which are both sincere and highly eloquent.
