1 Program Leader

The current social and economic situation is forcing industry to drastically reorganise, reinvent and adapt to changing conditions at breakneck speeds. The traditional role of design is changing too as product becomes de-materialised, manufacturing processes are transformed and new materials are introduced.

Design as a critical thought process and creative approach to problem solving, has to look beyond the conventional ‘product object’ to new product eco-systems involving services, platforms and communities. Designers also need to understand the lifecycle of a product from a social, environmental and technological perspective. The Master of Product Design Labs trains designers who are able to define, implement and manage their own design projects, forming interdisciplinary teams and coordinating the work of all the professionals needed to develop an industrially manufactured product.

I would like students to take the opportunity to work with people from a range of backgrounds and experiences, understanding that the discipline of design is more than packaging technology and applying aesthetics. Graduating students should be ready to contribute ideas and innovative solutions at all stages of the product development process. This involves critical thinking and the courage to challenge the conventional way of doing things.
