"The function of designers is rapidly changing. The skills, materials and production processes that have defined our activity for decades are all being transformed and redefined. We are no longer restricted to the confines of the design studio and modelshop, and our overall contribution extends beyond the aesthetic re-skinning of technology handed to us with a restrictive brief - we are called on to consider more than the finishes, qualities and affordances of a product as design is increasingly drawn into strategic decision making within technology research, new product definition and new business creation.

Design Thinking and the strategic successes of designers in modern companies, has expanded the role of design throughout the product development process. Design methods are being used in areas of decision-making previously outside of the confines of traditional design specialisms. Trans-disciplinary working practices present designers with the opportunities and challenges to work with specialists in fore-sighting, the development of new and enabling technologies, contributing to future brand strategy and a host of other capability areas, all of which require us to learn to communicate and contribute in these new and rapidly developing industrial contexts. These changes bring with them the challenge to understand the impact of design and the products we make to the society and environments we are dependent on. The technologies we deploy, the resources we transform and the methods of manufacture we engage, need to be understood to better create meaningful solutions that improve peoples lives.

This Masters programme concentrates on 'Why' we make products - where materials are sourced, the social contexts in which they will be used and the people who will be engaged in their creation, as much as it looks at 'How' we apply appropriate skills to solve problems."

2 Who's behind?

MDI is a place in which to ask new questions, questions that find in design the opportunity to be projected, transforming the way we live, the way we think, build and communicate.

The Thesis Project in a Masters degree is a battle with oneself. You need to proof your maturity as a student and show your capacity to deepen in a personal interest. At the same time you test your self-confidence, persistence and capacity to plan and organize your time. Its the moment to take oneself to the limit and get to know how far you can get. As a teacher, its always fascinating to guide through that strugle and to see how slowly the project falls into place and the student who entered the course at the begining of the year is no longer the same.

Álvaro Catalán de Ocón

Tutor

This year European design blended with Product design in our course, taking thesis development to new places: materials, time and altered states of mind. In a glimpse of time, the universe of solutions colapses in the final prototypes, physical footprints of the learning process.

Unit Coordinator

My experience as an MDI teacher is an exciting rewarding one, my fellow tutors and IED staff are like minded and wish to engender an environment where design has a voice that matters. We want the students thesis to ask questions and to provoke discussion around issues the concern our well being and our relationship to the environment.
