The designer is moved by curiosity in the face of new challenges and the passion to find possible solutions, and as Massimo Vignelli said: “creativity needs the support of knowledge to be able to perform at its best”. This knowledge is the nutrient that, with awareness and responsibility, enables us to overcome the challenges that arise in an increasingly more complex context, and it is our polyhedral vision which facilitates tackling them successfully.

For this reason, the Department of Sustainability of the IED Madrid works to respond to the commitment that design has with society and with our environment, guaranteeing the quality of life of today’s and future generations.

From the Area of Sustainability, training is offered to the Masters of Design and Innovation students, whose core is the systemic, responsible and passionate approach to the project, focusing on people, their wellbeing and that of ecosystems. From innovation and entrepreneurship, we wager on a development which does not always go hand in hand with growth.

1 Transformative Innovation: Moving beyond Sustainability to Designing Regenerative Cultures

Masters of Design and Innovation

Designing sustainably is the challenge of the 21st century. Because of this, this workshop by Daniel C. Wahl was aimed at understanding why sustainability is and should be important for design and innovation professionals, how the “power of design” can save mankind and procure a prosperous future.

2 Service Design Thinking

Service design—the planning and organization of user experiences in a creative, viable and user-centred way—is used by companies to create value for their customers. Through the workshop with Vincenzo di Maria, students go to know design methodologies, design thinking applied to services and socially responsible design.

The workshop was developed as a collaborative project with Propelland, a well-known design strategy studio.

3 Materials and Their Hidden Qualities

Experimentation and research were the protagonists of the workshop with Lex Pott, a designer whose work focuses precisely on the origins of the materials used. A source of inspiration to discover potential production techniques in design, the hidden qualities of materials and above all new opportunities.

4 Integrating sustainability into Design

Introducing students to a critical evaluation method for choosing materials and assembly strategies when developing products: this was the aim of Vernon Collis with this workshop. It allowed young designers to step back and critically analyse the life cycle of any material they were researching, as well as assessing the total economic impact of design decisions.

5 Social Entrepreneurship

Understanding the importance of social entrepreneurship as a solution to the challenges of global poverty is the aim of the seminar by Waya Quiviger. Through the review of articles, case studies and active participation in debates, students explored topics related to development, poverty mitigation, foreign aid and the role of non-state actors.

6 Biomimesis

Bio-inspired and sustainable innovation can contribute a lot to the work of designers from a systemic, innovative and regenerative perspective. Learning from nature was the aim of the seminar Biomimesis, an introduction to biomimicry as a creative process for designers who are inspired by nature.

7 Biotic City

Understanding the city as a biological system and a place to transfer knowledge from public to domestic spaces was the objective of the various workshops carried out by Pez Estudio. Students discussed issues such as urban beekeeping and aquaponics (a sustainable production system for fish and plants) and learned about different sustainable systems such  as water purification systems, energy production and composting.
