The trips that students take as part of the Masters of Design of Innovation are more than just that. They are experiences that go beyond, creating key moments for learning and personal growth.

These trips have the power to change students perception of design and innovation, providing them with opportunities to establish connections with the professional world and carrying out projects on the other side of the world.

The students will first take a trip around Europe. This will situate them in the midst of the professional context of their specialisation, and will give them the chance to come closer to important agencies and design studios, with workshops at prestigious companies, sharing experiences with true gurus of design, visiting large factories and keeping up with trends in the most innovative destinations for each discipline.

The destinations of the 2017 Masters of Design and Innovation are: Berlin, Copenhagen and Milan.

 

2 Berlin

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the city has become the most multicultural, avant garde and fun city in Europe. Designated as a Design City by Unesco (2006), it is a great cultural capital and the students of the Master of Communication Design Labs travelled there to discover this.

The young creatives travelled to the German city with a mission: to generate new communication ideas for Berlin using the Creative Strategy for Design Thinking (empathise, define and devise).

The first stops in the German capital were the International Packaging Design Fair, a meeting with innovation and design as a communication tool. This was followed by the central headquarters of Spotcap Global Services, an innovative business based on new technology to efficiently satisfy the credit needs of SMEs.

Berlin is a focal point in creative economy, hosting numerous agencies, design studios, galleries and museums. The students visited the Berlin headquarters of the iconic Ogilvy & Mather Berlin and the Dark Horse agency, devoted to user understanding and the capacity for innovation of companies, to help them tackle the digital revolution.

A must in Berlin was the creative studio Keen on Mars, a multidisciplinary space specialisation in tangible design, where they attended a master class by Meike Ziegler on Creatuals 2016: Creative Rituals Mark Moments. And they discovered The Kollectiv, a community for all kinds of creatives which functions as a collaborative, networking and support platform.

They also found out about a new approach to marketing with the Relevance Technology workshop. A methodology by the teacher Kai Platschke which has been adopted by successful brands such as H&M, Mammut, Nespresso and L’Oréal.

Berlin is the great cultural capital of the 21st century, combining galleries, museums, electronic clubs, fashion, etc. becoming an inspiring venue for the creatives of the Master of Communication Design Labs.

3 Copenhagen

Copenhagen European Trips

It is said that the citizens of Copenhagen are the happiest in the world. The secret lies in “hygge” and has a lot more to do with design than it may appear to. The Master of Strategic Design Labs travelled to the Danish capital to find out what lies behind this Scandinavian joy.

The trip to Copenhagen was a stimulating visit, five days immersed in a receptive society that is sensitive to design and sustainability. The first stop was the lecture “The Art of Entrepreneurship and the Entrepreneurship of Art” (Copenhagen Business School) where they were exposed to new ideas on the relationship between art, business and school.

They discovered the power of simplicity through Kontrapunkt, an agency devoted to the creation of brands that appeal to the heart and the mind, contributing to a better world. And they learnt about the importance of a good strategy, with Workz, an agency specialising in change management, the creation of strategies and leadership development.

They visited Designit, a global agency which uses design to transform society and companies. And ReD Associates, a strategy consultancy which has led the sector for a decade.

The search for inspiration and the love for design led the young creatives to Sweden, to Malmö to be specific. A post-industrial city which has become a reference point in design, sustainability and innovation, where they had the chance to visit Ikea’s headquarters.

Design is so endemic in Copenhagen that even the different neighbourhoods are defined by their own graphic identity. The students visited the peculiar neighbourhood of Christiania to produce a critical thinking project on the way of life and self-organisation of its population.

Copenhagen has design in its DNA, understanding it as a cultural element. The walks around its streets, full of design stores, its sustainable architecture, the visits to design museums and galleries have turned the trip into the perfect experience for the students of the Master of Strategic Design Labs.

4 Milan

Milan

In April, Milan is taken over by the “Salone Internazionale del Mobile”, a key event for students of the Master of Product Design Labs. Over five days, the young creatives were able to enjoy the tight cultural programme offed by the city, in an expedition through the future trends in the sector.

Milan is overflowing with inspiration, and during the design week the city is structured into several districts, in which to visit workshops, art galleries, stores and museums and take part in a range of activities. In addition to the classic Brera, Sarpi, Ventura Lambrate and San Biblia, this year there is a new district: 5 Vie, an area promoted by the Milan City Hall to showcase its monuments and legendary patios and palazzos.

During this trip, as well as visiting the different districts and, of course, the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the students attended the SaloneSatellite. A space devoted to young international promises, discovering new visions of design.

The students were enlightened by EuroLuce (International Lighting Salon) which takes place in parallel to Workplace 3.0., a think tank on the evolution of design in workspaces. And they had the chance to visit the innovation studio for the Design Group Italia brands, the headquarters of Esterni and the fun design, architecture, photography and fashion display at Triennale.

Milan is a design landmark every day of the year, as proven by the visits to the Rossana Orlandi, space, a permanent gallery which displays its artworks in a peculiar way, always in sets which recreate real situations. As well as Cascina Cuccagna, an old farmhouse from the 17th century, devoted to culture.

A trip to Milan at the time when the city becomes, more than ever, an incubator of ideas and innovative ideas and is full of people from the sector. An infinite source of inspiration which brought the students of the Master of Product Design Labs closer to the future trends of product design.
