The master has a project-based learning methodology. Carrying out a project allows students to establish and render tangible the lively learning experiences they have enjoyed. With this approach, from the outset they will have the aim of carrying out several projects throughout the master, in collaboration with companies and/or institutions in a real-world framework.

The development of the project was targeted and coordinated by tutors, teachers and specific meetings with the Program Leader, to help students apply the knowledge acquired. The subjects included in this area are categorized in three different domains: Research, Development and Implementation & Communication.

1 MULTIDISCIPLINARY

Working on these projects as a multidisciplinary team will generate an "agency environment” and promote synergies between individual talents. The work process provides a test bench to resolve conflicts, overcome obstacles, generate hypotheses and integrate the development of a group project from a logic of cooperation and benefitting from different areas of expertise and talent.

The multidisciplinary projects have been developing in collaboration with COPADE, Easy Vending, Proecuador and El Corte Inglés.

 

1.1 COPADE

 

The Fundación COPADE is a Development NGO founded in 1998 as a private, apolitical and not-for- profit institution, with the aim of promoting and developing Fair Trade, Responsible Consumption and the conservation of the Environment.

“Our collaboration with the Masters of Design and Innovation was not our first cooperation experience with the IED and it will surely not be the last. The results of these experiences have always been very positive and gratifying for both parties. Additionally, we needed to lend our project a fresh, new and comprehensive vision, as it is in itself a highly innovative project with very high standards of social and environmental responsibility. This is what led us to work again with the IED Madrid, particularly with the students of the Master, given their level of specialisation and the way in which they complement our work. We had very high expectations, as was required by a project like ours, which is going to be on the market in the next few months. These expectations were completely fulfilled.

The final result has been magnificent. The students worked in groups and we received a total of 6 very different and complete projects. We combined the best proposals, coming up with a comprehensive final product which includes: fashion brand (Gaia&Coast), design of the packaging for the different products and formats (snacks, beverages, fruit, etc.), vending machine design and design of the communication/marketing. All of this will be implemented and launched on the market in the first semester of 2018.”

2 SPECIFIC

The specific project has been developed in small groups of talented creatives from the same program and in collaboration with leading companies. Designing, executing and communicating is more effective when it is carried out through a real and specific project.

The collaborating companies for the specific project of this edition of the Masters of Design and Innovation are: momit (Master of Communication Design Labs) and Arcelor Mittal (Masters of Strategic Design Labs and Product Design Labs).

 

2.1 ARCELORMITTAL GLOBAL R&D ESPAÑA

 

ArcelorMittal is the world’s main manufacturer in the field of steelwork and mining, with a presence in 60 countries and industrial premises in 18 countries. Guided by a philosophy that is based on producing steel in a safe and sustainable way, it is the greatest supplier of high-quality steel in the main global steel markets.

The R&D development of ArcelorMittal in Spain is based on the great capacity for growth and expansion of R&D in Spain and on the excellent results achieved by teamwork.

“For the ArcelorMittal Global R&D Spain organisation, working with the IED Madrid has been a very positive and inspiring experience. The results obtained are in line with the high expectations generated when the professional relationship began. If to this we add the quality of the managers at the IED, a very pleasant and constructive work environment is guaranteed.

The proposals by the students have shown great quality, combining solutions aimed at obtaining results, with a great level of innovation. The result of the projects reveals great dynamism and creativity.

Specifically, these proposals are very well-matched to our business context and are particularly linked to some of our new lines of research, so, if there is a mutual interest, we will carry out a close collaboration with some of the students, to aid the development of their projects and bring their proposals to life.”

 

2.2 MOMIT

 

momit is a Spanish company working in the home automations sector, with a presence in 35 countries and headquartered in Spain. The company creates intelligent solutions using the Internet of Things (IOT) technology. momit’s intelligent technology offers efficient energy solutions which are easy to use, reducing energy costs arising from the inefficient use of temperature-control systems.

“By belonging to the technology sector, and, further, to the field of home automation, momit is always seeking new innovations and ideas to develop, in order to provide its users with greater satisfaction, through user-friendly and completely positive experiences. Because of this, we decided to collaborate with an educational institution with great prestige in the field of the development of products on all levels, like the IED.

This has been an excellent opportunity to work with a multicultural and interdisciplinary team which has allowed us to think outside the box to tackle points of view not explored by other brands, in such a way that possible users may find in momit’s proposals a better way of life, beyond a complication, something outside their reach or hard to understand.

Without a doubt, we are going to carry out some of the proposals offered by the students of the Master of Communication Design Labs. For example, the rebranding project we are working on and the implementation of some of the ideas of the winning team, which have brought us a breath of fresh air and a sense of approachability that any cutting-edge technology company requires in order to make its users feel confident enough to try out the brand.”
