23 The Adapt Shoe
The current shoe manufacturing and selling process is failing. Shoes are currently made far from where they will be sold with glues that are often toxic to the workers. The mass production process means that people with non-average feet can’t find shoes that fit. Also, when choosing shoes either online or at stores, it often isn’t possible to truly test how the shoe will perform outside and to know that it will be comfortable in all situations. Then, at the end of the shoe’s life it is usually thrown in the landfill.
The aim of this project was to create a shoe and a shoe store experience that addresses these problems. When a customer enters the store they can choose from a range of colours and shoe sole stiffness. Then each shoe will be custom made for the customers’ feet and then manufactured in the store in an hour. The shoe is made from only a few pieces that are laced together. The design uses recyclable materials and no glue so that pieces can be taken apart and replaced as they wear out. The sole is available in a range of hardnesses and is able to be exchanged as well, based on what the customer prefers.
