A Glance at Spanish Innovation. The Master of Strategic Design Labs in the Basque Country

Bilbao and San Sebastián, two of the cities making up the Basque Country, were the places enjoyed by the students of the Master of Strategic Design Labs during an intense trip. Why these cities? The answer is clear. There they could find three of the mainstays of this master: design, innovation and a vision of the future.

One of the cities playing a leading part in the adaptation to new business trends is Bilbao. For several days, the students visited social innovation companies there, such as ASOMO and the new headquarters of the Funky Projects agency, located in the co-working SODA space, created by Asier Pérez, tutor of the Master of Strategic Design Labs.

Likewise, they visited two very innovative concepts: the Flow studio, a company made up of architects who have reinvented the concept of the agency, devoting themselves to creating brands through their spaces (“from brand to build”); and also ZAWP & Zorrotzaurre, a visibility and revitalization project by La Ribera and Zorrotzaurre, through redesign and social and artistic intervention.

One of the students most special encounters was with Andoni Aldekoa, Chief Executive Officer of the Bilbao council, who laid out the future plan for the city and stressed that, thanks to the perseverance and dedication of Bilbao society to improve their environment, it had been possible to build the city as it is today and what it will be in the future.

Naturally, before leaving the city of Bilbao they paid a must-do visit to the Guggenheim Museum, where they were able to enjoy the temporary exhibitions of Yoko Ono and Ernesto Neto.

In the city of San Sebastián, the students visited the remodelling of the Tabakalera, an imposing building that will probably become one of the city’s most significant cultural spaces. Later, they went to a real reference point in gastronomic innovation: ArzakRestaurant. Accompanied by Igor Zalakain, they visited the creation laboratory, the library of spices and the wine cellar, a stronghold which is located on the top floor of the building.

To close the trip, the students travelled to the city of Vitoria and the MONDRAGONCorporation, a business group made up of cooperatives, which has established itself throughout the world as an example of work in cooperation and as the most important business group in the Basque Country.
