The Talent of the Masters of Design and Innovation Graduates at the Milan Fair, 2014

The Milan Fair is, undoubtedly, the event that generates the most opportunities to display their work and become known, not only for established designers, but for everyone who, for the first time, is searching for a space in such a dynamic and competitive world as that of design.

The Milan Fair is, undoubtedly, the event that generates the most opportunities to display their work and become known, not only for established designers, but for everyone who, for the first time, is searching for a space in such a dynamic and competitive world as that of design.

Despite its increasing mass nature, the Salone and Fuorisalone continue to be a meeting point where contacts are established and new ideas and productions are promoted. A perfect place, where interesting synergies can be generated between designers in various disciplines.

There, a frantic one-to-one is established between professionals, possible clients and design lovers. A mixture between exhibition and market, in which products can be sold, but where what is most desired is that contacts and opportunities to produce are generated with large and small publishers.

For an educational centre like the IED Madrid it is extremely stimulating to discover our graduates among other great professionals in Milan. Designers who move easily in a very competitive sphere, and with high-quality and interesting proposals.

Among those that we mentioned in an earlier news item, like Carlos Maté, Alejandro Tapias, Anna Lotova, Duygu Azun and Vanessa Redondo, there are others whose outstanding participation has been a pleasant surprise.

In the Superstudio space we met up with María Perales. This graduate from theMaster of European Design Labs 2010 has continued the research begun as a thesis project, with the Plug-In-The Family furniture. This table displays a refined use of off-white porcelain, as well as a top in European oak, planed and with a careful finish, all manufactured in Spain.

A few metres away from María, we were greeted by Erick Valdivieso with dozens of variants of his project Cupisnique.  A graduate of the IED Madrid and a collaborator for years in the Master of Design and Innovation, the Peruvian designer and communicator was inspired by the homonymous culture of ancient Peru to make an entire family of bottles and white ceramic objects that he himself produces in Madrid.

In another neighbourhood of the city is the Ventura Lambrate zone, an exhibition area increasingly more extensive in terms of both space and proposals. There, we met up with Ghassan Salameh, a Lebanese designer who attended the Master of European Design Labs 2011. In Milan, he presented a series of “illuminating objects” inspired by large arthropods, of rough manufacture and made by craftsmen from his country.
The originality of his designs has caught the attention of important media in the sector, like Domus.

As has now become customary, two graduates of the Master of European Design Labs 2010, Alexandra and Daria Gantseva, of the collective SashaDasha Design, exhibit in the Ventura Lambrate area, with their new series Northern Land. This project is composed of wooden trays, inspired by topographical themes, and adding another ingredient to their earlier research: the combinatorial possibilities of various elements with the aim of generating real or imaginary “archipelagos” on tables in homes or restaurants.

There have been more Masters of Design and Innovation graduates in Milan and the list could be much longer. The number of professionals who have trained in the IED Master courses grows every year, and now they are launching their ideas in the home of design, understanding the importance of being present in this essential showcase.

The school has always been committed to the promotion and dissemination of talent, an important support with which to strengthen the impact of communication in the media, in such a delicate and determinant moment as the beginning of the professional career of our students.
